Unum supports Foodbank

Unum UK supplies over 12,000 meals for local communities in its annual ‘Heroes for Hunger’ Food Drive

Dorking-based employee benefits provider Unum UK is helping support local people in the local communities fight hunger during the cost-of-living crisis.

Unum employees have donated over £3,000 via the FareShare Shop and Share store – the equivalent of over 12,000 meals for people in need. The virtual shopping trip allows donors to drag and drop from a selection of ‘meals’ into the cart, such as 14 breakfasts for women at a refuge or 10 packed lunches for children in the school holidays.

All individual employee donations of £30 or more were also automatically matched by Unum for this campaign, allowing Unum’s employees to make an even bigger impact of nearly £6000 in total.

Since 24th March, employees at Unum’s Dorking office have also been collecting physical donations based on the local food bank shopping lists, including over:

  • 4000 tea bags
  • 200 toilet rolls
  • 120 cans of baked beans
  • 150 easter eggs

The total weight of donated items was over 650kg – the equivalent weight of six baby elephants. These items were packed up by Unum volunteers - including CEO Mark Till - and taken to the Dorking Area Trussell Trust Foodbank.

FareShare is the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste. They redistribute good food, which would otherwise go to waste, to nearly 9,500 frontline charities and community groups (many of which are in Surrey), that support people in need.

Mark Till, CEO of Unum UK, commented

“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect people in our local community, I am pleased to be able to help support the vulnerable with vital donations to the Dorking Area Foodbank and FareShare. We strive to do the right thing for society and are proud of our ongoing commitment to give back to those most in need.”

Katy Harris, Project Lead at Dorking Foodbank, added,

“Dorking Area Foodbank would like to say a huge thank you to the Unum team for this incredible donation. It will make a real difference to the local people we support at this time of ever-growing need. At the moment, demand for our services is often outstripping supply and large gifts such as Unum’s really help to make sure we can be there for the people who need our help. The generosity and support for our work are greatly appreciated”
