Our history
Corporate history

At Unum we’re proud of our long-established heritage and to have grown over the decades to become one of the UK’s leading employee benefit providers. Here’s just a snapshot of our key milestones over that time.

  • 1965

    N.E.L. Permanent Health Insurances Limited (NELPHI) moves its head office to the historic Milton Court in Dorking, where we are still based today.

  • 1970

    NELPHI is incorporated as a subsidiary company to NEL.

  • 1990

    Unum Corporation (US) purchases NEL and becomes the parent company of NELPHI.

  • 1991

    NELPHI changes its name to Unum Limited.

  • 1999

    Unum Corporation merges with Provident Companies to become UnumProvident.

  • 2007

    UnumProvident Corporation changes its name to Unum Group, with three primary divisions: Unum US, Unum UK and Colonial Life.

  • 2012

    Unum begins its long-term partnership with Maggie’s cancer charity to raise awareness of — and support — people coping with a cancer diagnosis.

  • 2015

    Unum acquires National Dental Plan and introduces Unum Dental, its first non-Group Risk employee benefit offering.

  • 2018

    Unum acquires Poland-based employee benefits provider, Pramerica Życie, as it expands its European footprint.

  • 2018

    Unum launches Benni, enabling employers to provide staff with access to a range of voluntary benefits alongside existing employer paid options.

  • 2019

    Unum launches Help@hand — bringing fast, direct access to health and wellbeing support through a dedicated app and sees extraordinary take up.

  • 2021

    Unum Group announce leadership transition for UK and Poland with Mark Till confirmed as Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer.
