When your policy moves from Generali to Unum, you’ll notice some differences in how we describe certain terms of the policy (policy terminology), or differences in cover (policy terms) We’ve summarised the main differences in the tables below.

We can amend the policy terms if there is a significant change to your business. Notification of a death claim Notification of a claim is required within 24 months of a death. Please notify us of a member’s death as promptly as possible. This is not an exhaustive list.

Employees may need to be actively at work on the day before their cover is due to start, or for increases in benefit following a change in benefit basis or due to moving between categories or policies, as shown below.
Actively at work requirements

- Is actively following their normal occupation;

- Is working at their normal business or at another business location; and
- Has not received medical advice to reduce or stop their work activity.
If the actively at work requirement is waived, members who are absent from work will be covered under the temporary absence provisions.
Cover continues during absence due to illness or injury to the cover cease age or for up to 3 years, as shown in the policy coverage document.
During a period of temporary absence due to illness or injury:
- Salary related increases are covered in line with the employer’s general pay increases.
- The insured benefit cannot be increased due to a change in benefit basis or due to members moving between categories or policies.
We will provide temporary cover while a member is being underwritten.
Temporary cover starts from the policy anniversary or the joining date for new members.
Our account will show the members who need to be underwritten because their benefit is over the non-medical limit.If, within 90 days of the account being issued, the member makes an appointment for a telephone call to provide us with the health and lifestyle information we need (or returns a completed form to us), we will provide temporary cover until we have underwritten the member and written to you with our terms. If we don’t receive all the information we require, we may stop temporary cover. We will advise you in writing if this happens.
If, after 90 days of the account being issued, the member has not engaged in the underwriting process, we will stop temporary cover.
If temporary cover applies, we will provide cover for the amount of benefit that is being underwritten up to a maximum of £5 million. However, we will not pay benefit for death arising from a medical condition for which the member:
- Received treatment, care or services (including diagnostic measures); or
- Took prescribed drugs or medicines; in the 5 years before temporary cover started.
When a dependant’s pension policy is linked to a lump sum policy:
- The policies will share a non-medical limit.
- We calculate a capitalised value of the dependant’s pension benefit to assess a member’s total cover.
- If a member’s cover is restricted following medical underwriting, the pension element will be restricted before the lump sum.
- The value of the restricted pension may change over time (for example as a result of salary or capitalisation factor changes.
Where more than one death is caused by a catastrophe, our maximum liability for all related claims under any associated policies is £100 million, unless otherwise shown on your policy coverage document.
Where the catastrophe is a result of a group of members travelling together on business, the benefits will be limited to £25 million or, if higher, the total of the 4 largest benefits in respect of the members who died in the catastrophe.
We can usually offer cover for an employee who is based overseas. An employee who is based overseas must have a contract of employment with a UK resident employer and be based in one of our ‘authorised countries’.

Unless otherwise stated on your policy coverage document, we will not cover the death of a member as a result of or during business travel to a country or region where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel.
Please refer to the website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/foreign-travel-checklist for confirmation of these red locations.
We can amend the policy terms:
- At any time the premium rate is reviewed;
- If there is any change in the legislation (including the introduction of new legislation) which affects the premium rate or the payment of benefit under this policy;
- If there is any change in the taxation system which affects this policy; and / or
- If there is a significant change to your business.
You must tell us immediately if there is a significant change to your business including:
- A merger or acquisition;
- The sale of part of your business;
- A change to your normal business locations or overseas travel patterns; and / or
- Changes to the occupations of the members
We have the right to change the terms or premium rate to reflect any additional risk.
Please notify us of a member’s death by completing a claim form as promptly as possible.

Gainful occupation definition applies to members who require a special licence to perform their occupation. Material and Substantial Duties Mean the duties that cannot be reasonably modified or omitted. Mean the duties that cannot be reasonably modified or omitted for your or any other employer. Escalation of benefit Where benefit escalates in payment, the rate of Retail Price Index (RPI) or Consumer Price Index (CPI) used is usually the rate 2 months before the date of the increase. Where benefit escalates in payment, the rate of RPI or CPI used is the rate 3 months before the date of the increase. Maximum Pension Scheme Contribution cover Any pension scheme contributions insured are limited to 35% of Pensionable Salary, with an overall maximum insured contribution of £75,000 per annum. A Member’s pension scheme contributions can be included within this limit up to a total of 10% of Pensionable Salary. The maximum benefit is the lower of 60% of insured salary and £120,000 per annum. We will only cover an employee who is actively at work on the day before their cover
is due to start. Members who are not actively at work on the day before cover is due to start with Unum will become a Generali claim if applicable. Group Risk Development (GRiD) protocol for linked claims and switching schemes will apply. If the claim remains in payment with Generali at the time of the Part VII transfer, the claim will transfer to Unum (subject to Court approval).Actively at work means that an employee:
- Is actively following their normal occupation;
- Is working the normal number of hours required by their contract of employment;
- Is working at their normal business or at another business location; and
- Has not received medical advice to reduce or stop their work activity.
We can provide cover for up to 3 years for those on unpaid leave – e.g. reservists or
those on sabbaticals.The insured benefit cannot be increased during a period of temporary absence.
We will provide temporary cover for the amount of benefit that is being underwritten
as long as:- The member meets the actively at work requirement on the day cover is due to start; and
- The amount of the member’s benefit has not been restricted by us.

Yes. There are no restrictions to cover whilst on business travel.
We can amend the policy terms:
- At any time the premium rate is reviewed;
- If there is any change in the legislation (including the introduction of new legislation) which affects the premium rate or the payment of benefit under this policy;
- If there is any change in the taxation system which affects this policy; and / or
- If there is a significant change to your business.
You must tell us immediately if there is a significant change to your business including:
- A merger or acquisition;
- The sale of part of your business;
- A change to your normal business locations or overseas travel patterns; and / or
- Changes to the occupations of the members
We have the right to change the terms or premium rate to reflect any additional risk.
Insured occupation cover means a member is incapacitated if they are unable to perform the material and substantial duties of their insured occupation because of illness or injury.
However, if a member is required to hold a licence or certificate which is issued only when the member meets required medical standards, the member is incapacitated if they are unable to perform the material and substantial duties of any gainful occupation because of illness or injury.
Gainful occupation cover means a member is incapacitated if they are unable to perform the material and substantial duties of their insured occupation and any gainful occupation with any employer for which they are reasonably fitted by reason of training, education or experience because of illness or injury.
Material and substantial duties means the duties that are normally required for the performance of the occupation, and which cannot be reasonably omitted or modified. It is those duties required for the performance of the occupation at their, or any other, employer.

The policy coverage document will show:
- If you have chosen to insure an increase in benefits; and
- The rate of increase that applies.
If you’ve chosen an index-linked rate, we will:
- Use the annual increase in RPI or CPI rates as at the date 3 months before the date the benefit is increased; and
- Not reduce our benefit if RPI or CPI falls below 0% per annum.
Will employees benefit from higher Pension Scheme Contributions on transfer to Unum?
Yes employees currently impacted by the Generali maximum Pension Scheme contribution thresholds will benefit from Unum’s maximums on transfer.

Yes. All eligible employees are covered subject to Unum’s pre-existing conditions exclusion. If a policy is moved to us from another insurer on the same benefit basis, the pre-existing conditions exclusions will start from the date the member’s cover started with the previous insurer. Should you elect to switch to Unum for Base + Extra cover as outlined in the Critical Illness User Guide on the same benefit basis, then the pre-existing conditions exclusions for the Extra cover would also start from the date the member's cover started with the previous insurer.

We offer two types of cover – Base Cover which covers 13 critical illnesses, or Base and Extra Cover which covers an additional 26 critical illnesses as outlined in the Critical Illness User Guide.
Members’ children are automatically covered at no additional cost for 25% of the member’s cover up to a maximum of £25,000, from birth until their 18th birthday (or 21st if in full time education), for the same critical illnesses as the member plus number of children-specific critical illnesses.
