British workers want access to dental insurance more than a company share save scheme or gym membership
4th June 2018
New research* from Unum Dental has found UK employees would prefer their employers to offer dental insurance to a company share save scheme or discounted gym membership. This finding comes on the back of yet another 5% hike in NHS dental care cost this year. Since 2015 NHS dental costs have increased by over 15%.
Increasing costs and limited access to NHS treatment means dental insurance is a benefit employees value highly. It provides a very tangible benefit that employees can access right away, typically with full cover being provided for NHS costs from day one.
When it comes to UK adults seeking appropriate dental treatment, cost was the biggest barrier, with 33% citing this as deterrent, more than twice as many as those who avoided a visit due to fear (14%).
Andrew Bower, Unum Dental Managing Director, commented:
“Avoiding treatment due to high costs in the short term is likely to lead to far higher cost and inconvenience further down the line and UK workers are wise to this. Of the claims we deal with the majority for preventative treatments, and prevention is always better than cure when it comes to maintaining good oral health. For many having appropriate cover is the only way to achieve this.
“As dental cover can be provided as a benefit, or on a flex or voluntary basis, it’s an insurance that’s both cost effective and low risk for an employer to introduce.”
Recognising sourcing and paying for important dental treatment is not only difficult employees, but for their families too, Unum Dental has enhanced its cover and can now include:
- Cover for child dependents up to the age of 30 years
- Cover for employees’ parents
Andrew Bower commented: “As the state provision and private costs for dental treatment continue to change we need to ensure our products reflect the real life needs of employees, which is why we’ve made the enhancements.”
